Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Laksa (Michelin Bib Gourmand)

Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Laksa

Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Laksa was previously known as Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Claypot Laksa, has replace the use of claypot for their laksa to bowl. Claypot is not only great for its aesthetic reason and is able to capture heat and keep the food hot throughout the meal. Moreover, Zhen Shan Mei has lost its Michelin Bib Gourmand award this year, when they have been a regular recipient of the award every year since Michelin Singapore first started. Nevertheless, the long snaking queue is still equally long, and you might have to queue for 20 – 30 minutes during peak hour. The laksa is price at $4.50, $5.50 or $6.50.

The gravy is prepared using turmeric, blue ginger, chili, belachan, shrimp paste, lemongrass and coconut milk, is particularly hearty and luscious, with the right amount of heat to complement the slurpy noodles. Bowl is filled with cockles, Tau Pok, sprouts, fish cakes and topped with finely chopped green curry leaves and sambal chili. Definitely worth the wait and the calories!

Hong Kong Yummy Soup (Michelin Bib Gourmand)

Hong Kong Yummy Soup

Hong Kong Yummy Soup is managed by Hilda Xie and her husband, who started this Cantonese soup business in 2014 when they moved to Singapore from Hong Kong. The soup was so delicious that it has been a regular winner of Michelin Bib Gourmand Singapore since 2018. Stall is always flooded with customers queuing for comforting and nutritious soups at a very affordable pricing.

Stall offers six different soups and two dishes daily, including Spareribs Soup with Mushrooms, Spareribs Soup with Lotus Root, Spareribs Soup with Winter Melon, Brazil Mushroom Soup with Chicken, Cordyceps Flowers Soup with Chicken, Night Blooming Cereus Spareribs Soup and two dishes – steamed pork ribs with rice and Pumpkin steamed Minced Pork with price starting from $4.

Soups made from pork ribs and other ingredients like lotus root, winter melon, or mushrooms are a big hit, and Xie’s specialty is a broth made from night-blooming cereus spareribs. Every soup sold at the stall is made from scratch without any added MSG, and the duo makes sure to use only ingredients that are high in nutritional value. In contrast to the “cooling” and detoxifying effects of night-blooming cereus, the cordyceps flower is useful for strengthening weak constitutions and individuals who are recovering from sickness.

Xiang Jiang Soya Sauce Chicken is owned by Uncle Sun, who used to be working in Raffles hotel as a Head Chef for Chinese Cuisine. The stall was opened at Jit Poh Building at Keppel Road initially but relocated to Alexandra Hawker Centre later. His dishes are so nice and popular that loyal fans consider it to be a worthy contender for one of the best Soya Sauce Chicken in Singapore to rival Michelin-starred Hawker Chan.

Stall has been a regular winner of Michelin Plate since 2019 for its tasty, tender and delicious soya sauce chicken. Serve it with a plate of springy egg noodles, which help to absorb the unique soy sauce, pork lard oil and chili mixture. Then top with vegetables and sambal chili. What a perfect combo to blend with the juicy and tender chicken.

Tiong Bahru Lien Fa Shui Jing Pau was founded by two brothers, originated from the Seng Poh Road Market in 1951. It was demolished and they decided to move their stall to Alexandra Hawker Centre in 2004.

The stall offers traditional handmade Teochew dumplings stuffed with three types of ingredients in sweet or savory flavors – original savory turnip, sweet red bean and sweet yam taro. This Michelin-approved crystal dumplings (90¢ each) are so popular that they are always sold out quickly. If they are gone, you will have to wait an hour for the next batch.

Savory turnip dumplings are the most popular one and complement perfectly with their homemade spicy sambal chili. The translucent skin is made using tapioca flour. It is elastic and you can clearly see the fillings inside, which include turnip, bits of shrimp and mushroom. The dumplings are chewy and savory, plus this might be the only stall left in Singapore to find this nostalgic taste.

Leon Kee Claypot Pork Rib Soup stall served their Hokkien style Bak Kut Teh in a traditional claypot, which is similar to the Malaysian versions. The menu includes Pork Rib Soup, Liver Kidney Intestine Flour Vermicelli, Pig Tail Soup, Pig Trotter, Sesame oil chicken, Mushroom Kailan, Pork Rib Noodle, Claypot Prawn Noodles, Meat Ball Soup, Claypot Liver, Oyster Mee Sua and more.

Leon Kee’s signature Pork Rib Soup is cooked for hours using Dang Gui, Dang Shen, and many different Chinese herbs. The soup is not too intense but flavorful with a sweet savory aftertaste. The pork ribs are tender and chewy that easily tear-off-the-bone. Perfect to pair with the fluffy white rice and dark soy sauce with cut chili. The dish is so popular that even Michelin inspectors approved it and listed in Michelin Guide Singapore since 2019.

Dover Road Kai Kee Wanton Noodle

Dover Road Kai Kee Wanton Noodles is managed by an old couple who started their operation at Dover Road selling old school wanton noodle for almost 30 years before they moved to Alexandra Food centre in 2011. Stall offers Wanton Mee, Dumpling Mee, Shredded Chicken Mee, Dumpling soup and wanton soup for $3 or $3.50.

The wanton mee has the genuine old school nostalgic flavor unlike those you have tasted in Singapore. The springy noodles are evenly tossed in soy sauce, pork lard oil, sesame oil and chili sauce. The chili was mild and fragrant. The Char Siew was sliced too thinly and lack in flavor. It will be great if they are drizzle with some sweet sauce. The Wanton dumplings are really generous but pretty decent in taste. Overall, the dish is very generous for $3.50 and good if you have a strong craving for Wanton mee.

Star Yong Kwang Seafood

Star Yong Kwang Seafood is a popular Zi Char stall located at the back of Alexandra Food Centre, famous for their signature BBQ Stingray, sambal squid, sambal Kang Kong and some of Singapore’s favorite dishes.

For $20, we were served with a smaller portion of sambal stingray, fully covered with sambal chili and topped with onions slices, lime and cincalok. The sambal was fiery but shiok with a good amount of heat and sweetness. Stingray meat was well grilled with crispiness at the bottom. Meat was fresh and chewy, and you can taste the charred and smokiness of it. Glad to squeeze in the limes as the tangy acidic flavor added the taste to the next level. Complement it with white rice for the perfect meal.

On the downside, the price of this stall is slightly on the high side and definitely not for price sensitive customer!

Tai Liok Claypot Chicken Rice

Claypot chicken rice is a favorite dish of the locals, and it’s easy to see why. Tai Liok Claypot Chicken Rice is one of the popular stalls at this food center to sample this local delight. This dish is so popular that you might have to wait 40 to 60 minutes if you didn’t call in earlier to pre-order your meal.

The bowl of claypot is filled generously with rice brimming big servings of chopped chicken parts, Lup Cheong (Chinese sausage), liver sausage, salted fish bits and vegetables. Upon serving, give the fragrant burnt rice a good toss with dark soya sauce and oil immediately to add a smooth, sweet and savory finishing, and to prevent the rice from being overcooked at the bottom. In contrast to the dryness of most rice served in claypot, theirs is perfectly fluffy and flavorful.

Stall also served Watercress with Pork Rib Soup, Old Cucumber with Pork Rib Soup, Preserved Vegetable with Duck Meat Soup, Herbal Black Chicken Soup and Pig Stomach with Pork Rib Soup to complement their claypot rice.

Old Punggol Satay

Old Punggol Satay

Satay fans rejoice as there is a fantastic satay stall in Alexandra Village Food Centre. Old Punggol Satay is originally located in Punggol but was closed due to owner’s health issues. They have decided to restart the family business at Alexandra Food Centre when the son is ready to take over. The stall is specialized in Chicken, Pork and Mutton satays selling at 80¢ per stick.

You can always expect juicy, flavorful meat at Old Punggol Satay because the meat utilized here is well marinated, consistently juicy and moist, with wonderfully charred skin. In addition, the satay sticks are presented with their secret peanut sauce recipe with added pineapple puree. It would be better if the satay sauce is a bit thicker and size of satay are more consistent, as some sticks are having half portions of meat. Moreover, we have seen lots of negative reviews recently regarding the poor attitude and drop in satay standard.

King Avocado

Among the many things that stand out about the Alexandra Village Food Centre is the abundance of stalls offering avocado juice. King Avocado is one of the most popular stalls beside Mr. Avocado, which has lot of fans queueing up for their delicious avocado juicy.

King Avocado is probably the best avocado drink that I have tasted in Singapore, and I will never fail to grab a cup whenever I was driving nearby. The avocado juicy ($3/$4) was thick, creamy and smooth with the right balance of the richness in the avocado blend and the sweetening Gula Melaka syrup. It is not overpoweringly sweet, and delicious.

In conclusion, get avocado juicy from King Avocado for its creamy avocado flavors or get from Mr. Avocado if you want more sweetness.

Poh Cheu Soon Kueh and Ang Ku Kueh (Michelin Guide)

Poh Cheu Soon Kueh and Ang Ku Kueh

Poh Cheu Soon Kueh and Ang Ku Kueh was founded by Neo Poh Cheu and his wife in 1985, specialized in selling handmade Ang Ku Kueh and Soon Kueh. Stall started with 6 simple favors of Ang Ku Kueh; Peanut, Green Bean, Salted Bean, Yam, Durian and Coconut and soon expanded to 12 flavors in order to appeal to the younger generation. This strategy paid off as the stall was awarded a Michelin Plate in 2019 and maintained its popularity with customers.

Each Ang Ku Kueh was handmade beautifully with a gorgeous color to represent each filling. Each piece is priced at $1.30 with a minimum of 5 pieces in order to get a box. The skin was smooth and glossy, and the fillings were chewy, delicious and not too sweet. A perfectly colorful dessert after meal!

Do note that this stall is just 2 minutes or few blocks away from Alexandra Village Food Centre.

127 Bukit Merah Fish Soup

127 Bukit Merah Fish Soup

127 Bukit Merah Fish Soup is a hidden gem situated beside Poh Cheu Soon Kueh and Ang Ku Kueh. This stall has NO name, and we name it 127 Bukit Merah Fish Soup as it is located at 127 Bukit Merah Lane. The queue at this stall can stretch all the way out of the coffee shop during lunch hour.

Stall offers fish soup, fried fish soup, seafood soup and mixed pig’s organ soup. Their signature fish soup is a very popular choice especially their double fish combo, which comes with both sliced and fried fish. You can have your fish soup served with white rice, yam rice, mee suabee hoon or yee mee.

My bowl of fish soup was generously filled with fish slices and battered fish right to the rim. You can taste the natural sweetness and freshness of the fish slices. The battered fish was chunky and wrapped with lot of crumbs. It still remained crunchy despite having soaked in the soup for a while. The milky broth was pleasantly sweet and flavorful with evaporate milk added into the fish broth. Overall, a delicious, generous and flavorful bowl of fish soup definitely worth queueing for.

Do note that this stall is just 2 minutes or few blocks away from Alexandra Village Food Centre.
