Feng Ji Kwap Chap is owned by a husband-and-wife team Wong Seng Hong and Hong Choi Peng. Husband is a native of Perak, Malaysia, moved to Singapore when he was 17 and has worked in the food and beverage sector ever since. He started working in a Kway Chap stall to gain experience before started his own Feng Ji stall.

The kway chap here is the cheapest in Singapore at only $2.50 and filled with quite generous serving size. That is why you will always expect a huge crowd. Traditional toppings for for the dish including fish cakes, braised pork, intestines, tau pok, pig skins and a hard-boiled egg, all of which are served alongside the soup. The soup is refreshingly light with herbal taste. The rice noodle has a stronger, more substantial texture than most others but maintains its signature silky smoothness because of its relative thickness. Each slurp is a flavor explosion, thanks to how well it soaks up the soup.

The braised pork is incredibly soft and tender, while the intestine has a pleasant chewiness and fresh flavor. Those with a refined palate for pig intestines will enjoy this dish. Further, the herbal goodness of the sauce is absorbed beautifully by the tau pok.

Kim Kee Tanjong Rhu Wanton Mee is a very popular stall at Jalan Batu Hawker Centre. It has gotten its fame when stall was featured in a Hong Kong television drama starting Chan Lam. As a result, it always gathers a long snaking queue daily. Stall offers wanton mee (dry), Wanton mee soup or wanton soup. Price at $3.50 or $4.50.

Recommend getting a big bowl of Wanton Mee Dry for $4.50 to enjoy the meal. The noodles are well-executed, being both springy and flavorful. Wanton was a bit small but chewy and succulent. The highlight of the dish is the generous serving of pork lards and their signature sauce that is used to toss the noodle. They are absolutely crunchy and savory when you chewed them in the mouth. Just find the Char siew to be a bit dry and a little more moisture would have been perfect.

Belirub is a one-man stall managed solely by owner Vincent Terence Tan, 62. Stall was featured in Buzzing Hawker in 2018 under the mentorship of chef Petrina Loh from Morsels and business has picked up since then. His specialty is his grilled chicken dishes, with optional accompaniments such as coleslaw, dauphinoise, or french fries. Menu includes Chincalok Wooster Grilled Chicken at $8.20, Aglio olio with rosemary chicken at $6.50, cajun grilled chicken at $7.80, fish and chips at $6.80 and maryland chicken at $6.80.

Chincalok Wooster Grilled Chicken is his signature dish created using the new recipe created by chef Petrina Loh. Chincalok and Kea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce is used to marinate the chicken meat together with olive oil, garlic and onion to create the flavorful taste. The chicken thigh is then grilled to perfection and served together with the marinated sauce, accompanied with his homemade coleslaw and baked potatoes. The chicken is tender and savory yet it would be better if the portion of the chicken was larger. Despite this, MediaCorp Channel 5’s Buzzing Hawkers has promoted Belirub as a “must-try” dish.

Victory Canton Wok is a famous Zi Char stall at Jalan Batu Hawker Centre well known for its wide selection of affordable meals and dishes. Popular items include the crisp and savory Har Jeong Gai (prawn paste chicken wings) and the tender and juicy “pai gu wang” (king of pork ribs) served in a sweet and citrusy-sour sauce. Stall also featured their daily specials on the menu too.

The pork ribs are really tender and juicy, topped with black and white sesame seeds and chopped spring onion. The sweet and sourly explosive flavor burst right into the mouth after every bite.

Do be patient as waiting time can be pretty long during peak hours.

Ah Mah Chwee Kueh

Ah Mah Chwee Kueh was officially open in October 2018 at Jalan Batu Hawker Centre. Although it’s a relatively new stall, it has acquired a lot of loyal fans who visit the stall daily and commented that their chwee kueh is the best in the East.

The steamed Chwee kueh, made with rice and tapioca flour is firm and smooth. Served with a generous serving of Cai Poh (preserved radish) topping and glad they are not too salty or oily, but a bit sweet. I like the sambal chili as it is savory, mild spicy and does not overpower the flavor of the dish. The savory taste levels up quickly and melted away once you gobbled them together.
