One of Singapore’s many notable food centres is Newton Food Centre & Market, located close to Orchard at 500 Clemenceau Avenue North 229495 and just 5 mins walk from Newton Mrt Station. It is a renowned eating area where you may satiate your hawker food desires. With 83 delectable food stalls, it’s no surprise that this hawker centre was chosen to appear in Crazy Rich Asians. Nearby food and vicinity include KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, The Istana, Balmoral Plaza, United Square Shopping Mall, Novena Square Mall, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Stevens Road, Scotts Road, Cairnhill Road, Newton Road, Thomson Road and more. I’m aware that Newton Food Centre & market has a negative reputation as a tourist trap and a hawker center with inflated costs. If you look past the costs, you’ll find an unusual mix of cultures and fuss-free delicious hawker food.

Kwang Kee Teochew Fish Porridge has been around since 1962 and has moved from Old Orchard Road Carpark to Newton Food Centre in the 70s. It has gained huge popularity once it has been awarded Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2021.

Although the fish soup looks simple and plain, it definitely sweet and flavourful with lots of cabbages to give it a crunch and sweet taste. The broth use fish bones to cook in slow flames of hours. The batang fish slices are thick, fresh and nicely prepare without fishy smell. Definitely worth a try!

Hup Kee Fried Oyster Omelette

If the length of time it takes to obtain a plate of food is any indication of how amazing the cuisine is, then Hup Kee Oyster Omelet must be phenomenally delicious. You should know that a plate of their Oyster Omelet at $8 took about 30 minutes to arrive! Was the 30-minute wait worthwhile? Definitely Yes!

Hup, Kee’s oyster omelet is a little eggier than most oyster omelets, and it takes a little longer to cook. As a result, the interior is soft and starchy, with a delightful crunch on the outside. The oysters were the very last to be added to the sizzling hot skillet to ensure that they are creamy and plump and not overcooked.

Consider a turnip stew with crunchy beansprouts and sliced boiled eggs enclosed in skin-thin popiah skin. Topped with bean paste and a spicy chili sauce that amplifies the flavors in this nutritious goodness roll.

Kwee Heng has a large selection of roast chicken, duck dishes and kway chap, but will highly recommend their Duck Noodle at $5 per bowl.

Their braised duck meat is soft, tender and succulent. Boneless meat sliced generously, covered in fatty skin, taste really nice and savoury. The chilli sauce was spicy with a tinge of tangyness. Request for a bowl of herbal soup to complement the noodles as the strong herbal flavour will enhance and stimulate your taste buds.
Their Kway Chap was pretty decent and can’t compare to their popular duck dishes.
