Sheng Seng Fried Prawn Noodles (Michelin Guide)

Sheng Seng Fried Prawn Noodles offers a popular and affordable Fried Hokkien noodle to the residents of Pek Kio for many years. Price at $3.50, $5 and $6. Michelin inspectors love the stir-fried Hokkien Noodle and homemade chili sauce and awarded Michelin Plate to this stall since 2018.

The plate of noodle was rather wet and have a nice mixture of yellow noodle, thick and thin mee hoon stir-fried with bits of vegetables and eggs. The prawn stocking was not too heavy and overpowering yet added lovely aroma and fragrant to the dish. Garnished and fried with slices of squid, prawns and slices of fish cake. Then topped with their homemade sambal chili and lime on the side. Chili was rather fiery and spicy, added a good amount of heat to the dish. Might be a pity pork lard was not included but would recommend this dish for a healthy choice. Really satisfying!

Pin Wei Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun (Michelin Guide)

Pin Wei Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun has been situated at Pek Kio hawker Centre for 13 years, managed by Mr. Tan and his son Eddy. Stall is popular with its smooth and silky Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun and has been awarded Michelin Plate for the freshly made rice roll with the perfect consistent thickness and flavors. Their 2nd newly outlet at Blk 216 Bedok Food Centre has been in operation since June this year, with 3rd outlet coming up at Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre by 1st or 2nd quarter of 2023.

Stall offers 4 types of steamed rice rolls with plain at $3, Char Siew at $4, Prawn at $5 and scallop at $6. The soft, thin and silky homemade rice rolls is definitely enjoyable on the palate with small bits of char siew being wrapped inside. Taste of char siew wasn’t too overwhelming and matched the wraps really well. Perfectly paired with light soy sauce, sesame oil, sesame seeds and sambal chili for greater enjoyment.

Wah Kee Big Prawns Noodle (Michelin Guide)

Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodles started their business in 1951 and has been serving prawn noodles to their loyal fans for around 70 years. Stall has always been a consistent winner of Michelin Plate for its palm-sized prawns noodle in soup or dry. Unfortunately, stall is not only famous for its food but also a temperament stall owner auntie resulting in a lot of negative feedback. Prawn noodles are priced at $5 and $10 with bigger prawns priced at $15, $20 & $25.

For first timers, it is recommended to try the $20 option. You will notice three large half-deshelled prawns sat exquisitely in the aromatic and orange broth served in a mini wok. On the other bowl, you can find dry Kway Teow noodles fragrantly tossed in their homemade sauces, filled with bean sprouts and vegetables, generously topped with fried pork lard and shallots. The prawn was fresh, plump, succulent and huge with almost the size of my palm. The soup was light and sweet as it was boiled with seafood and prawn shells, without pork bones. Do note that this stall is definitely not for price sensitive customers.

Lai Hiang Pork Rib Prawn Mee

Lai Hiang Pork Rib Prawn Mee is the other popular prawn noodle stall at this Pek Kio Hawker Centre that is consistently crowded with long snake of customers especially during lunch time. The stall is run by a husband-and-wife team for several years, serving prawn noodle in either soup or dry version, priced at $2.50, $3 and $5. It is pretty hard to find a decent bowl of prawn noodle for just $2.50 nowadays.
The generous bowl of dry prawn noodle comes with piles of Mee Kia, fish cakes, pork slices, prawn and a small bowl of broth, topped with fried shallots and chili powder. The springy and slurpy Mee Kia was evenly tossed with soy sauce, pork lard and chili. Loved the de-shelled prawns as they were fresh and juicy. Pork meat was tender, and fishcake was soft to chew. The soup was light and watery with mild sweetness. Do come early as food might sold out as early as 1pm!

The highlight of the dish is the roasted chicken and roasted pork belly as they are tender and juicy. The owner was relatively generous in the portion of rice and meats, as the meats almost cover the large portion of the rice. The fluffy rice might be a little weak in the fragrance, but owner drizzled some salty sauce or braised sauce for the duck rice to complement the weakness.

Good Spice Carrot Cake

There are two carrot cake stalls just a few stalls away from each other at Pek Kio Food Centre, and I have decided to try this stall as it has a long queue while the other stall is pretty quiet. Stall is managed by a friendly old couple with wife taking the order and husband doing the cooking. Stall served black or white carrot cake at a very affordable pricing starting at $2.50, $3, $4 or $5.

The carrot cake is pan fried using radish cubes with generous number of eggs and Chye Poh. The fried carrot cake is soft and savory with mild Wok Hei flavor. Love the black version with added sweet dark sauce to give the dish a mildly sweet tinge, and the amazing sambal belacan for the extra heat. Do expect slow moving queue as stall owner fried the carrot cake plate by plate to ensure consistency and quality. It is value for money for the price and if you are looking for a genuine old school flavor.

Although the queue is long, it moves relatively fast. Stalls offers an old school Wanton noodle or Dumpling noodle for $4 or $4.50. Do come early as food might sold out as early as 12pm!
The bowl of wanton noodle was generous piled with egg noodles tossed in red brown sauce and topped with char siew slices and dumpling. The egg noodles were slightly thicker than other stalls but was springy and slurpy. The soup was light and sweet with three fresh and plump wantons inside. The homemade char siew slices were tender and nicely coated with sweet red coloring. The highlight of the dish was the mild spicy sambal chili made from dried shrimp. Absolutely delicious!

Although it is relatively new, it has already built-up lot of regular customers for its delicious and healthy fish soup without MSG. Stall offers sliced fish soup, fried fish soup, double fish soup, seafood soup, fish porridge, lala soup, fish head soup and Yong Tau foo soup starting from $4.
Ordered a bowl of sliced fish soup at $6 with bee hoon. This bowl of goodness is served with sliced fish, tofu cubes, vegetables in a nicely flavored soup which is boiled for hours. The sliced fish is fresh and tender, absolutely chewy after every bite. The soup is so sweet, tasty and delicious that you can’t stop slurping it down the throat together with the bee hoon.
